The world is running out of blue collar guys with rough outdoor jobs... which is bad news for a worker boot company.
Timberland, the New Hampshire boot maker might have been in trouble. But back in the 1990's, something strange happened. In New York's Rap scene, the boots caught on BIG.
Tupac, Mobb Deep and Biggie Smalls started wearing and rapping about them.
Success it never sought
At first Timberland didn't know how to merge its blue-collar-outdoorsy- heritage with its new found fame in the Hip-Hop world. But smartly they have embraced it.
The Timberland story is one of adaption; of marketing and product. Once the company realized who its core fans were, it began to to focus on them, rolling out new styles and colors and doing collaborations with brands like Pharrel's Billionaire Boys Club.
This strategy continues to serve Timberland well. Earlier this year, it rolled out its purple and gold Hip-Hop boot. They even have boots on the ground (pun intended) with a flagship location in New York city. To draw loyal shoppers, the store offers in-house customization and a new membership program.
What do rappers wearing Timbs have to do with your business?
Everything.
First, they learned that they have more than one core demographic and have embraced it. And the demographic is as far from the woodsy-Bambi-hiker as you could get. Are you overlooking a target audience that may double your business?
Next, they have a successful membership program. Yes... a boots membership. and while you may say "but my business is different", you could not be more wrong. Every business can have a membership program. Carpet cleaners, Financial Planners and Physio therapists.
Many of the best innovations, ideas or new markets come from looking outside of your industry. You just need to keep your eyes open.
