Hey ,
I’ve spent the last couple days hanging with my 80 year old mother in the town I grew up in. It’s a small town in central Jersey right next to Princeton.
She lives across the street from my old high school and yesterday I went outside to grab the newspapers when I heard the best sound in years…
An entire drum line from the marching band was practicing across the street.
Wow, does that bring back memories.
Yes…
I was (am) a band geek.
Though back in the 80’s we were not called geeks. Rather we were called Band F*gs (insert what the English call a cigarette).
But you know, I wore that label with pride since we were one of the top marching bands in the state.
Then in 1984 and 1985 I was in a drum corps (think professional precision marching band) called the Garfield Cadets.
Hours upon hours of marching drills and music practice all to put on a 10 minute show. I played trumpet. Back in the day I could really nail the upper register. I was called a mini Dizzy Gillespie. (Google Him)
We competed against other corps from around the country in late spring and early summer.
The end of the season was marked by the DCI Championships. DCI = Drum Corps International. Where the Garfield Cadets placed FIRST both years. The only other win was two years later in 1987. But I was long gone by then.
They never won the championships again.
Now, am I saying that because I was no longer playing????
