Sea Cucumber Crime Is a Thing, and A “seafood mafia” is plying the waters between India and Sri Lanka to satisfy China’s appetite for an increasingly rare delicacy.
Neither animal or vegetable, these eyeless and limbless echinoderms are vital to the health of coral reefs. They recycle sea waste into nutrients that help the reef, by pooping out 5 Eiffel Towers worth of excrement.
And while you can get a regular backyard grown cuke for a buck, the sea cucumbers fetch thousands on the Chinese food black market.
As sea cucumbers get rarer, they get more valuable, which in turn encourages more illegal fishing. That drives the competition for the remaining specimens to dangerous heights—or rather, depths.
The species dwelling in shallow waters have been depleted so much that divers are now targeting those in deeper waters.
Sea Cukes are killing harvesters
At least 40 divers have lost their lives harvesting sea cucumbers in the past few years, most from decompression sickness.
Make money safely and legally
But there are far more lucrative, less deadly and legal ways entrepreneurs can make money rather than chasing pooping cucumbers.
Say… like…writing a book. Though it is definitely easier than diving for Sea Cukes
And even though you have a magnificent message to communicate (like saving Sea Cukes), the frustration you’ll encounter, the time you’ll invest, and the sleep you’ll lose trying to write your book just isn’t worth it.
