Hey ,
I am often asked how I get as much done on a daily, weekly or annual basis. At last count, I own four businesses, write two newsletters & a magazine, run a mastermind and two coaching groups, and travel the world speaking.
In addition to all that, I read about 40 books a year and daily I consume two newspapers and a magazine or two.
Throw in the activities of two very active teenage kids and I could be a very stressed out, balder and maniacal mess.
Oh… did I mention I take a 90 minute lunch break and finish the work day by 4:30 PM?
Daydreaming? Yep I do that too.
I can hear you asking now… Who has time to daydream?
Well, for one, I do.
I could tell you that I have become a master at Multi tasking.
But that would be a lie.
You see, multi tasking is a lie. A lie that all too many people embrace as the way to get stuff done. But there is one problem with it
our brains are not wired for it.
According to brain doctors, our brains are wired to only do ONE cognitively demanding thing at a time.
You might think you are a multi tasking. But you are not. You are actually switch-tasking, rapidly switching from one task to another.
And as you switch back-n-forth between tasks your mind starts to stumble as you try to remember what you were just doing. Switch tasking:
- makes you less creative
- makes you prone to mistakes
- kills the quality of your work.
What do I do, Vance?
Well first, you need to get back to doing just one thing at a time. Set a timer for 20 minutes and just work on one thing. Nothing else, just that one thing.
Don’t check email, texts or twats.
Just that one thing.
You will be amazed at what you just accomplished.
To be clear: I have ALL alerts on my computer and phone turned OFF! No beeps. chirps or ringy-dingies.
I don’t have 14 open browser tabs, 7 half-written emails and a partridge in a pear tree.
One thing done.
