From the Far Eastern Shore of Maryland
Remember the famous scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones is running down the hill screaming for his pilot, Jock, to start the plane?
They barely escape the angry hoard of Hovitos trying to impale Indy with spears. And Indy finds Jock’s pet snake Reggie in the cockpit of the plane.
Did you know Jock:
- was an American freelance pilot?
- was a stunt pilot performing in Midwest US airshows?
- In the June of 1936, Lindsey flew Jones and Marcus Brody to Tibet, in search of Francis Beresford-Hope and his piece of the key to an underground Siberian tomb?
- Is a fictional character?
This one minor character, with total screen time of about 3 minutes, has a complete back story. As does every minor detail in the movie:
- Hovitos? Fictional, but they are descendants of the Chachapoyas (who were real).
- That Gold statue Indy was after? Fictional. The Chachapoyan Fertility Idol was created by the Chachapoyans circa 64 BC,around the same time the Temple of the Warriors was erected to house it.The Chachapoyan priests hid the idol away inside the temple as part of a soldier’s rite passage.
Jock even built his own restaurant based on his (fictional) adventures. But “Jock’s Hanger Bar” is a very REAL place at Disney Springs. The entire restaurant is an homage to Jock’s adventures around the world.
Every detail in the (real) restaurant has a story.
What does a movie character, a fake Peruvian tribe and a fictional gold statue have to do with your business?
Everything.
Disney is the gold standard of story telling.
And it is their stories, both real and make believe, that separates Disney from all of their competitors.
Your story is what will separate you from your competitors.
- Do your employees know your story?
- Do your clients or patients know your story?
