For the first year of its’ existence, Disneyland had its’ very own bra shop.
The Intimate Apparel shop was located at what eventually became the China Closet, a shop featuring collectible figurines.
The store , which featured an exhibit on bra’s throughout the ages, was never one of Walt’s favorites.
It lasted just one year.
Apparently, buying intimate apparel was not on the top of anyone’s list of things to do when visiting the Magic Kingdom.
You would think Disney would have learned…
35 years later, they opened another… ahem… unmentionable’s boutique; Jessica’s
Opening sometime around Pleasure Island’s debut, and much like the character the store was based on, the store had some interesting features.
The most dramatic and recognizable was the huge two-sided 30′ neon sign of Jessica herself sitting atop the outside of the building.
Not just a static sign,
Jessica’s leg actually swung back and fourth slowly. Her dress was accented with sequins that moved in the breeze and attracted the light. A purple neon outlined her silhouette.
And on course, you could buy Jessica Rabbit lingerie; see through tops, black mesh and something they said was underwear, but was only about a half inch wide, so it did not really cover much.
About the only place you can find Disney lingerie now is on some disreputable sites on line.
But Disney did learn… They learned how to sell better (and more)
Jessica is a character from one of the best live/animated films of all time. And Disney was going to milk it for all its’ worth.
Disney’s scheme was to capitalize on their movies by creating merchandise, attractions and all manner of things to sell to guests.
Sometimes, the movie came out AFTER the attraction was open (Pirates of the Caribbean has been around long before Jack Sparrow and the movie).
