20 Yards From The North Sea
Hey ,
After a long day in Philadelphia, and an even longer flight to the UK, I finally made it, though I have no idea what time it is.
My host got me a nice room looking over the North Sea. Beautiful.
But I won't be putting my toes in anytime soon.
Just the name of the sea 'North' sounds bone chilling cold.
The event in Phili was packed. I met some great people and signed 2 more speaking gigs while I was there.
I was also painfully reminded of the adage; Those that can't 'do', teach.
There are a lot of DUMB marketing companies in the world. Many of them were in the same building as me yesterday at the Small Business Expo I was presenting at in Philadelphia.
Case in point:
Across the aisle from me was a website development company. They had out their standard tchotchkes; pens, stress balls, and candy
The had decent banners, albeit with missing words... Their main banner proudly proclaimed they were
America's #1 Digital Marketing
What?
Digital Marketing WHAT?
Yep
That's what they proclaimed... America's #1 Digital Marketing dunderheads. How can you miss an entire word?
But that is not the best part...
They had a TV monitor in their booth that was supposed to show something.
A video?
A picture?
A website?
(Now remember, before I tell you the punchline.... this is a technology company...a marketing company.... specializing in all things websitey....)
We will never know what was supposed to be on the monitor as they could not get it to work.
For 6 hours they showed a giant purple screen with the words...
Computer. No signal> Is it On?

Of course, I could not just sit by idlily and let them continue to shoot themselves in the foot... So I went over to say something
- Me: Having a bit of trouble with your monitor?
- Them: Yep, we are having trouble connecting to our website.
- Me: DOH! Accompanied by a Homer Simpson Headslap.
- Me continued: Maybe you should just turn it off
- Them: A frowny face directed at me and a look that said 'I am the idiot in this conversation'.
- Me: Scurried back to my booth
What's this got to do with your business?
A whole lot!
Pay attention to details. Don't allow poorly constructed messages (or banners) to detract from your messaging.
Be careful who you listen to
Would you buy a website from a company that can't get their own website to work?
Would you take advice from a coach or consultant who has not "been in your shoes" or "in the trenches"?
The answer to both of those questions I hope is "NO".
