How I paid for college

I was waiting for those 12 drummers who were drumming to show up, but we have 8 inches of snow. While that may be a pittance in other areas of the country, it is enough to shut down the schools for 3 days!

But if those drummers were like the drummer in my band, Range of Motion, they would have charged on through, not missing a beat (pun intended).

You see, Tim (we called him Bam-bam) was an incredible drummer. All the chicks digged him. Heck, he was the drummer.

I was allowed to sing, but most of the time the sound engineer had my mic turned off. Just as well, I don’t think I would have contributed to the harmonies all that well.

But I did write many of our songs! We had 2 albums out in the late 1980’s and toured New England consistently from 1986-1990.

And that is how I paid for college! It sure beat delivering pizza or being a dishwasher (both noble professions).

Most Thursday’s we would drive 90 miles to Boston from Springfield, set up for the show and play a gig from 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM. Then we would hop back in the car, hoof it down the Mass Pike, catch a couple hours of sleep and then make it to Friday morning classes.

We repeated the sequence on Friday and Saturday without the 90 mile jaunt down the Mass. Pike.

We would do that about once a month. The other weekends were spent in Albany, NY, Hartford Conn, Rhode Island and many towns in between. We even opened for a few BIG NAMES (at least they were big in the ’80’s.: Rick Springfield, The Outfield, The Hooters and Bryan Adams)

All good things must come to an end.

In 1990, I had to make the decision of entering the workforce with a real job, or continue to scrape by in the band. We were so poor at one point, that we had to go clamming one afternoon, sell the clams, just to have enough money to pay the sound engineer.
