Well, I knew the time would come.
I have been dreading it for years.
The knock at the door… there… standing before me…
Two men (well they might have been women, it’s hard to tell these days), shiny badges hanging around their pencil necks, clad in JC Penny suits, weapons still holstered…
2 G-men (women)
From the IRS.
Two of those newly armed (with visors and calculators, at least) and dangerous IRS agents.
It seems that my tax returns have had some… how should I say it… abnormal write-offs.
- $17,023.62 in Mickey Plushes
- $874 in shredded American currency
- $1,498 in Pez Dispensers
- $202,832.16 in hotel rooms at Disney
You see, I am on my 4th accountant in as many years.
None of them could grasp what I did for a living, until my current accountant, though I am cautiously optimistic he will get me out of this mess (audit)
Based on a recent WSJ article, It would seem I am not alone:
- In St. Augustine, Fla., Tommy King, who makes YouTube and TikTok videos about videogames from his bedroom, became a full-time creator last year and says a tax expert he consulted was “dumbfounded” when he handed over receipts for $1,000 worth of outfits for his avatar in the game “Fortnite” and fees for making it perform dance moves.
- Ali Spagnola has been carefully compiling receipts for thousands of dollars worth of supplies, including 40 pounds of cotton-candy sugar, 15,000 Lego pieces and a red baby grand piano.
I have a hard enough time explaining to my wife and friends what I do for a living, now I have to try to explain it to the Fed’s?
My private client and DSNi Alliance member Leonard Raskin has said on many occasions that he is continually surprised by the sheer number of ways people have decided to earn income.
But that is the great thing about living where we do… The freedom to make money how we see fit (legally and ethically, of course)
Before the Berlin Wall came down, East Germans were assigned their professions while still in high school, based on their status in the communist party and the needs of the motherland.
And we see how that ended…
You are what drives the economy
So do your patriotic duty, go out and sell something.
