Do not drink caffeine before you go shopping!
I have discovered why my wife always comes home with stuff she never intended to buy or with greater quantities of planned purchases.
It turns out, there is a legitimate reason for these excessive purchases and the drain on our bank account.
She drinks coffee.
Before and during her shopping trips.
In a recent Journal of Marketing, researchers have proven that drinking coffee, or any caffeinated beverage for that matter has an affect on how much and what we purchase.
During a test, consumers that had coffee bought nearly 30% more items than the others and spent nearly 50% MORE!
Now, coffee did not measurable affect the purchase of toilet paper, green beans or canned corn (staple items) but had its biggest impact on high-hedonic products (items that bring pleasure; perfume, shoes, $44,000 per ounce body lotion).
And while a XXX flick brings one type of arousal, "caffeine enhances energetic arousal", a condition where you are in a heightened state of alertness and excitement. Which leads to...

What's this got to do with you?
Business owners need to get their customers and prospects high on caffeine (completely legal) before they shop with you.
I have an attorney firm as a private client that has a gourmet coffee bar. All prospects and clients are presented with a menu and asked for their favorite beverage and it is brewed especially for them. Brought on a silver tray into the meeting.
(By the way, every attorney, paralegal, records person and receptionist knows how to brew the special brew. Best baristas in So. Cal.)
Another client, a book publisher, sends chocolate covered espresso beans to his prospects before meeting with them.
While neither of those businesses sell traditionally hedonic products or services, I would NEVER recommend they stop these treats for customers.
