Selling the free for massive profits.

I've learned that, similar to the program at Shanghai Disneyland, Disneyland Paris is planning to replace their free FastPasses with a paid option called Premier Access. A free option – Standby Pass – will also be offered and available during select times of the day in the official Disneyland Paris app. This option will allow guests to join the queue during a 30-minute time slot subject to availability and is said to help reduce wait times at some of the more popular attractions. Similar to the original FastPass program from back in the day, guests will only be able to hold one Standby Pass at a time. However, once your 30-minute timeslot has begun, you will be able to secure another. Disneyland Paris will charge €8 to €15 (between $9 and $18) per ride. Yes, you read that right, per ride. Disneyland has something a bit cheaper at $20 per day called the Max Pass, but it does not give you the ability to go straight to the front of the line. But it does come with a daily unlimited download of PhotoPass. FastPass... MaxPass.... Photo Pass.... What do these all have in common? Disney has ingeniously sold you something you can get for free. Yes, they are masters at it. I don't think there is anyone in the world better at selling you free stuff then Disney.
  • Max Pass: Waiting in line is free. Waiting in a line, albeit shorter, costs you.
  • Photo Pass? Pictures used to be free. Remember those Kodak Picture Spots all around the Magic Kingdom? Sure, you had to take the picture, but you did not have to pay Disney for it.
  • Magic Bands? Up until this year, they were free (A Magic Band is your park ticket, door key and wallet all rolled into one band you wear on your wrist.) If you don't like the free blue or grey band, Disney will happily sell you one with Mickey or Ariel on it for $19.99.
It costs Disney mere pennies to print a band with a character on it. Those special bands are 99% profit. How can you adapt this strategy in your business?
