The 6-shooter that changed America

I am in the middle of a fantastic book "Revolver: Sam Colt & The 6 Shooter That Changed America". Probably the most detailed, researched and fact checked book on Colt's life and business of creating the worlds first revolver. Did you know? In the time it took to ram a charge and a lead ball down the barrel of a single shot rifle, Comanche Indians could shoot six arrows or run 150 yards with spear and tomahawk. This is one of the reasons Davey Crockett and the rest of those poor souls were massacred at the Alamo. America needed to up its' game on weapons. Colt had been working on his revolver design since he was about 16 years old. That is all he focused on. He had a tenacious, relentless pursuit of his goal. One paragraph last night caught my eye. Immediately after the great New York fire of 1835 where over 700 buildings were destroyed, Sam Colt arrived back in America from Europe where he was filing the patents on his 6 shot revolver. His attention was so controlled and directed on his goal, that he walked by the burnt out shells of buildings without noticing the destruction. Just walked right by. Napoleon Hill would later categorize this in his book "The Law of Success" as "Definiteness of Purpose". Success and progress towards achieving your goals begins with knowing where you are going. Without a definiteness of purpose, you are as helpless as a ship without a compass (or GPS these days). Want success? Begin by knowing, believing and acting on your goal, purpose or mission. My mission at the Deliver Service Now institute is the eradication of poor service, one business at a time. My mission for the carpet biz is "creating healthy homes" What is your mission? Your definiteness of purpose? Will you block out all distraction on your mission to achieve that goal? If you said "no", maybe your mission is not powerful enough. Maybe you truly, deep down, do not believe it. Your mission must be so definite, so purposeful, and so dominating, that you have a burning desire to achieve it. Blocking out and bypassing distractions. Is your mission so strong that you sometimes lose track of time or walk past "burnt out buildings" without noticing? Now is a good time to test your mission
