Back in the early days of the Super Bowl, the best team from the upstart, wide open, brash American Football League would play the champions of the stoic, established, conservative National Football League for professional pigskin supremacy.
Prior to Super Bowl III, odds makers established the Baltimore Colts, representing the NFL, as a “sure thing” 18-point favorite over the underdog New York Jets of the AFL. The Colts had a veteran team with a superior defense that lost only once during the regular season.
The Jets were young and unproven – they didn’t stand a chance.
New York Jets’ quarterback Joe Namath had other ideas.
While relaxing poolside a few days before the big game, he answered questions from a handful of reporters and was bold enough to guarantee the Jets would win the game.
This made headlines across the country. The Jets?! They didn’t have a prayer against the best team from the superior National Football League. This young punk Namath would be eating his words come Super Bowl Sunday.
How could he be so cocky, so arrogant, so foolish!?
On January 12, 1969 Namath and the Jets met the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Many figured the contest would be over by halftime.
Surprisingly, the Jets took an early lead. Namath’s quick release and pinpoint short passes mixed in with a strong running attack neutralized the mighty Cold defense and helped control the pace of the game. While New York’s agile, athletic defense stymied the Baltimore offense all game long. Namath and the Jets made believers out of everyone that afternoon.
The final score: New York Jets 16, Baltimore Colts 7.
Namath was bold enough to guarantee a victory.
He knew the Jets had a master game plan in place, had superior talent on both sides of the ball, and most importantly had the will and motivation to win, especially since everyone thought they couldn’t do it.
