Why do people use jargon instead of just saying what they mean in plain ol’ English, Spanish or Lithuanian?
Yesterday I spit my coffee out laughing and a Gummit (government) employee who said they had to “up-channel” my request.
Up-channel?
Sounds like something a proctologist would say during a prostate exam. How about “let me ask my boss” or “let me check with my manager“? Both of which get the point across without sounding like you just read the Human Resources Guide on How To Annoy Fellow Employees.
What else sounds stoopid?
Taking a noun and turning it into a verb.
The NFL has been at it since 2022 with their tagline “This is how you football“.
Football is a NOUN. Always has been, always will be.
Last month I tried to upgrade a component on my computer. The turd on the customer support line actually said “We sunset that piece last year“
Sunset is also a NOUN.
Other annoying phrases that just won’t die?
- Alignment: I want to make sure we’re in alignment about…
- Back Pocket: Let’s keep that in our back pocket…
- Circle Back: I wanted to circle back on…
- Lockstep: Let’s make sure we’re in lockstep about…
- Piggybacking: Piggybacking off of what Susan just said…
- Unpack: Let’s unpack these ideas…
