From the Far Eastern Shore of Maryland
Hey ,
I am about to make y'all feel very, very smart. (Maybe. I hope.)
I recently was a speaker and had a booth womaned by my wife at a Small Business Expo in Washington, DC, where booth space is expensive, and competitors are up against each other.
I watched the vendors around me.. Four sold digital advertising. Two sold computer security systems - which I'm shopping for. One was a small mom 'n pop charity, taking in abandoned and injured animals and working with troubled youth at a small farm in Upper Marlboro, MD. With the latter, I chatted, pet the bunny rabbit, told them of my pro-bono fundraising assistance given to animal charities, and handed over a crisp $100.00 bill as donation.
To the two security companies' salespeople and owners, I explained my business and what I was considering for a system.
To the four digital marketing companies, I presented myself as a ready and able buyer.
Total, seven exhibitors.
Their score: ZERO.
Stunningly, NONE made ANY attempt to capture my information for follow-up, let alone CLOSE on an appointment or conditional sale.
They all suck.
All stupid.
All they did was answer my questions, stuff run-of-the-mill brochures in my hands, and send me on my way. Back to their conversations with each other, their checking e-mail and texting, or the next interruption by a prospect.
They should all STARVE. Sadly, I may be compelled to force money upon a couple of 'em. But they should all starve to death. (One of the plagues upon American society is that there are a growing number of folks who absolutely deserve to starve but we won't let them. Too bad that's not legal)
They had no system of follow up. No system to capture leads and no system to monetize the leads.
MOST sales of everything are made through an organized process of effective follow-up. More so, most top income by individuals or top profits by business is earned through an organized process of effective follow-up.
If you don’t have such a process, use it, enforce it, you can forget about top income or top profits. (Did I mention, a lot of businesspeople deserve to starve?)

P.S. As a little aside, I took pity on some women at a Mary Kay booth, because they were at least trying to do more than stand there like pink lawn statues. They were out in the aisle, with their tubes of miracle hand lotion, asking “ Doyawannatrysomelotion?" And getting rebuffed. I took one lady aside and said: (a) be good to put pauses between words. (b) Change your script to: "You just have to try this amazing hand lotion!" (c) Deliver the line with a smile and enthusiasm. Her first four tries, three takers. Of course, she still wasn't getting contact info or making an offer and closing sales, just giving out globs of goop.
But she was happier.
Sigh.
That's me, spreading sunshine 'n happiness wherever I go. A Johnny Appleseed of happiness am I.
P.P.S.
As you can tell, the whole thing left me p.o.'d. I went to relax, enjoy myself - I wound up more aggravated than before I got there. $8.00 to park, $14.00 to get in, to watch the sales-handicapped stand around getting older. 20/20 hindsight, I should have gone for a stroll at the zoo.
