The internet is clogged worse than arteries waiting for a quadruple bypass.
According to recent data, worldwide, the number of emails sent and received per day in 2023 is 347.3 billion—a 4.3% increase over 2022 (Source: Oberlo)
That is 44.48 emails for every man, woman, child, them and those in the entire world!
On any given day, the average American gets 147 emails a day.
For those of us of a certain age, this is as bad as the real mailbox was back in the 1980’s. People just became unable to handle it, even overwhelmed.
As Gary Halbert said “everyone sorts their mail over the trash can” and trying to get rid of as much as possible.
Today?
Sorting occurs by either hitting the delete button or just plain ol’ ignoring it. In the 80’s, you couldn’t ignore your mailbox as the mailman would just start dumping the mail on the front porch.
Add to that all the other forms of messaging competing for our attention; tweets, telegrams, IM’s and the like. And even before your email inbox, you have deliverability issues.
So you have the issue of can the salmon swim upstream and actually ever get there or…
Your email is like a million sperm heading for just that one egg.
Your email must be the winning sperm / salmon
So, what emails get opened immediately?
- those from friends and family
- from your employee’s or boss
- Those with intriguing subject lines
Let’s face it, when someone sees “New Offer Inside!” as the subject line for every single email you send out, it gets boring pretty quickly.
Subject lines MUST be treated the same as headlines, as they are the ad for the ad.
The only job of a headline is to get you to read the next line.
The only job or a subject line is to get you to open the email.
I see too many business owners take the time to write a great email only for it to never see the light of day because they did not take the time to create a great subject line.
Emailing requires successful users to be smarter and smarter and more thoughtful about their writing.
